Hey there! Let me break down PoE systems for you in simple terms. You know how security cameras need power and a way to send video? Well, PoE is pretty neat because it does both jobs with just one Ethernet cable. It’s like killing two birds with one stone!

Picture this: you’re setting up cameras around your place. With PoE, you don’t have to run around looking for power outlets or dealing with a mess of cords. One cable, and you’re good to go. It’s a real time-saver, trust me.

Now, you might be thinking, “Why not just go wireless?” Sure, wireless cameras sound convenient, but here’s the thing – PoE systems are rock-solid reliable. You’re not gonna lose footage because of some wonky Wi-Fi signal or interference. It’s a physical connection, so what you see is what you get, no dropped signals or fuzzy videos.

I’ve dealt with both setups, and let me tell you, when it comes to not missing a beat (or a burglar), PoE is the way to go. It’s simple, it’s reliable, and it just works. No fuss, no muss!

What are the benefits of a wired security camera system?

  • Easy installation: Ethernet cables are easy to install, and the PoE technology eliminates the need for separate power cables.
  • Reliable: Wired systems are more reliable than wireless systems because they are not affected by interference or signal loss.
  • High-quality video: PoE cameras can transmit high-quality video because the Ethernet cables can handle a larger amount of data than wireless systems.
  • Remote access: Many systems allow for remote access, allowing you to monitor your property from anywhere in the world.

Did you know that security systems significantly reduce burglary risks by 300%, with real-time threat alerts enhancing safety. Visible cameras alone deter 66% of burglars, and 60% would flee if an alarm sounded during a break-in attempt.

What Customer Thinks

We really do love our home security cameras. The video quality is great! The voice recording is excellent. I gave it a 4 star or two reasons.

1- the scroll feature to whole a hour segment only allows advance in seconds. BUT, You can easily watch events, specks, cars, people and pets via playback then go back to the time block and watch more footage as needed….

Camera software pick up a ton of events so easy to watch more footage of events!!!! It really is very user friendly!!!! The IR camera and lights at night are great.

Love being able to check in when we are our of town. Alarm is loud and you can talk and it’s clear from speaker.
Install was easy (not getting into our attic to run cables) plug and play.

2- The DVR fan is a little loud. We ran cables down into our utility closer and mounted on shelf and it’s quiet now…. just make sure there is air circulation to keep it cool.

Great camera and product! Don’t forget, you have to by cable and connectors…. it wasn’t really clear or I missed that it wasn’t included. We bought the pass thru cat-6 RJ45 connectors, made intall go faster!

We love the cameras!

What Customer Thinks

This is the third camera system I’ve installed in my home in the last few months. The first one was a Lorex system that cost around $1200. I returned it because I could not get it to quit giving false motion alerts. Then I bought an 8 camera Reolink system. That system was a big improvement and I was happy with it. Then, browsing Amazon, I noticed they had this 12MP eight camera system for a few hundred more dollars.

I was still within the return window on the first Reolink system so I returned it and purchased this system. It has been great so far. Very good image quality. The app is simple and easy to use. Setup was easy. I haven’t had any interactions with tech support so I can’t comment on that. Upgrading to this system also gave me lights on the cameras, audible alarms on each camera, and the ability to talk and listen over the cameras. Those are all nice features and work well.

A few things I’d change… 1) The cameras don’t lock on to the mounting plate. They just spin on and there’s a slight click. If a dirt bag wanted to, they could just unscrew the camera and pull it off. That was one thing the Lorex did better, it had little set screws that locked the cameras to the plate so removing them would require a tool and at least a few minutes of time.
2) I think like most of these “cheaper” systems, the smart detection is kind of a gimmic. I’ve been trying for a month to get the settings where it only tells me if there is a person or a vehicle in the camera’s view. It still occasionally alerts me to a wasp, a cat, or nothing that I can discern. It is an improvement over the Lorex technology, though. I’m hopeful one day I’ll get the settings just right.

3) Not enough NVR storage capacity. I like to keep my system recording 24/7. I could get about 5 days of recordings before it started overwriting older stuff. That wasn’t enough for me so I added a 6TB Seagate drive (not cheap!) in addition to the one that comes with the system. I think it can keep about 12 days of recordings stored now. If I ever get to a place where I 100% trust the accuracy of its motion triggers, I may switch it to record motion only. That would greatly increase the amount of days I could keep on the storage.

Overall, I like this system and for the cost I consider it a good deal. I looked at a couple of U.S. company’s commercial systems when I was shopping and they were $2500-$4k for the same amount of cameras and comparable NVRs. The way I look at it, I saved a ton of money and all it cost me was the weaker camera mounting system (which hopefully will never be a problem) and the occasional false motion alert.

Thanks for reading! Hope that helps someone in their search.

What Customer Thinks

I’ve just finished installing all the cameras. This system replaces one I’d been using for 8 years. I thought I was happy with my old system, but this new Swann system has raised the bar on what qualifies for happiness! I’m using the default settings until I have time to digest the massive, well-written manual.

The lightweight plastic camera housing let me dangle the cameras from the Cat5 connector without creating strain on that connector. A camera needs to swing freely while I attach its base to the soffit. Coincidentally, the three(3) screw holes in the base lined up perfectly with those in the old system, so I did not need to drill new holes.

I needed to loosen all the camera housing screws to enable all degrees of freedom. For my installation, all the cameras are shipped “upside down”. There might be a software setting to rotate the image, but, as I said, I’ve not read the entire manual yet. I found it easiest to screw the base into place, stuff excess cable up into the soffit hole, fit the camera onto the base, fine tune alignment with those previously loosened housing screws.

What Customer Thinks

I bought the four camera 4K NVR system with 2TB drive, and I added three more cameras for a total of seven cameras recording 24×7, I was only getting about 4 days of storage on the NVR. I recently replaced the 2tb with a Seagate SkyHawk 10TB (ST10000VX0004), it was crazy simple. I have about 16 1/2 days of recordings and another 2.5tb free. I’ll probably get around three weeks. I think with a four 4K camera system and a 2TB drive, you’ll get about a weeks worth of video at max resolution.

There is a feature to FTP video’s to offline storage, but once there, you do not have an integrated video browser/viewer and you do not have an automated way to remove video’s when they get x days/weeks/months old. I could do it if I really wanted and probably make it work, but I would rather have a larger hard drive.

The 10TB is the max they say they will support, I’m not sure of what the real limitation is, support wasn’t very technically helpful on that. There is a single cable and while you may be able to rig another power cable (Y power adapter) and additional drive cable, I’m not sure the firmware/software will understand spanning two drives. I was really impressed, installed new drive, turn it on and viola, it installed itself, re-added the cameras and my settings. VERY NICE!!!

A study by the University of North Carolina found that about 60% of convicted burglars stated the presence of a security system influenced their decision to target another home.

Factors to consider

There are several factors to consider, including:

Camera resolution
The camera’s resolution is an important factor to consider because it determines the quality of the video. Higher resolution cameras will provide clearer and more detailed images.

Field of view
The field of view is the area that the camera can capture. A larger field of view means that the camera can capture more area, providing better coverage.

Night vision
If you want to record in full color at night, look for cameras with built-in spotlights. Most security cameras have infrared lights.

Storage
Storage is important because it determines how much video footage you can save. Look for a system that has a large storage capacity or allows for cloud storage especially if you go for 4K cameras.

Remote access
Remote access allows you to monitor your property from anywhere in the world. Look for a system that allows for remote access through a mobile app or web browser.

Guide to Implementing Optimal PoE Security Cameras & Systems

Setting up PoE security cameras might sound tricky at first, but don’t worry – it’s actually pretty simple once you break it down. We’ll walk you through a few easy ways to get your cameras up and running smoothly, no matter what your setup looks like. To keep things simple, we’ll use Reolink PoE cameras as an example. Think of it as a step-by-step guide to make your life easier!

Method 1: Direct Connection for PoE-Supported Routers

If you’ve got a router that works with PoE, setting up your security cameras is a breeze. It’s as easy as plugging in a USB stick – just connect the camera with an Ethernet cable, and you’re good to go. Even if you’ve never done this before, you’ll have your cameras up and running in no time.

Need more space to store all that footage? No problem. You can add something called an NVR (think of it as a special hard drive for your cameras) to your router. It’s like adding an extra closet to your house – suddenly you’ve got tons more storage space!

Method 2: Implementing a PoE Injector/Switch with Non-PoE Routers

When faced with routers lacking PoE capabilities or installation sites beyond the reach of current cabling, employing a PoE injector or switch becomes essential for enabling your IP cameras.

Utilizing a PoE Injector:

To set up using a PoE injector, connect the camera’s Ethernet cable to the injector, link the injector to your router, and power up the injector. This method typically supports a single camera per injector. For multiple cameras, incorporating a network switch or opting for a PoE switch is advisable.

Employing a PoE Switch:

A PoE switch simplifies the process further. Connect all camera Ethernet cables to the switch, link the switch to your router, and power on. This method is efficient for managing multiple cameras.

Method 3: Enhancing with an NVR

Incorporating an NVR into your PoE camera system offers local video storage. Purchasing a complete set from a single manufacturer, including both cameras and NVR, facilitates direct connection of cameras to the NVR via its PoE ports, supporting straightforward setup and remote viewing capabilities.

Planning and Installation Considerations

Prioritizing a detailed plan for your PoE security system, including installation sites and potential need for PoE extenders, will guide the optimal setup route, tailored to your requirements.

PoE vs Non-PoE Cameras: What’s the Difference?

When you’re trying to decide between PoE and non-PoE cameras for your security setup, it’s really important to know what sets them apart. This way, you can make a smart choice that works best for you.

Installation Ease and Cost-Effectiveness:

PoE cameras make things a lot simpler. You just need one Ethernet cable to handle both power and data, which means setting them up is easier and usually cheaper. On the flip side, non-PoE cameras need separate wires for power and data. This can make installation a bit of a headache and end up costing you more in the long run.

Centralized Power Management:

PoE cameras have a cool advantage – you can control them all from one place using a PoE switch. This makes managing your system a breeze.

You can do things like restart cameras remotely or adjust how much power each one gets. Non-PoE cameras don’t have this central control for power, so you can’t manage them as easily. It’s kind of like having all your light switches in one convenient spot versus having to walk around the house to turn lights on and off.

Maximum Installation Distance and Transmission Speed:

PoE cameras are pretty impressive when it comes to distance. They can send clear signals up to about 100 meters (that’s roughly the length of a football field) from where they’re plugged in, without needing any extra boosters.

This means you get reliable, fast data no matter where you put them. Non-PoE cameras, though, can be a bit trickier. You might not be able to put them as far away, and if they’re wireless, things like walls or other electronics can mess with their signal speed. It’s kind of like how your phone’s WiFi works great in some parts of your house but not so well in others.

System Flexibility and Compatibility:

Non-PoE cameras have their perks. They can work with the network you already have, and if you’re dealing with tricky spots, wireless ones can be super handy to set up. But here’s the thing: for most big security setups, PoE cameras are often the way to go. They’re more flexible and usually give you more bang for your buck.

At the end of the day, choosing between PoE and non-PoE cameras really comes down to what you need and what your place is like. It’s kind of like picking a car – you wouldn’t buy a sports car to haul lumber, right? You’ve got to think about what fits your situation best.
