How to reset an IP camera back to factory settings
This article provides instructions on resetting IP cameras, including those with physical reset buttons and those without.
Physical Reset Button
Most IP cameras have a physical reset button for factory reset. The button’s location and reset procedure vary by brand, so consult your camera’s manual for specific instructions. However, here’s a general guideline:
Locate the reset button
Common locations include near the SD card slot, on the camera’s cable, or inside the dome (requiring you to open the camera).
Power down the camera
Disconnect the power cable or network cable (if using PoE).
Hold the reset button
The exact duration can vary, but it’s typically between 5 and 30 seconds. Refer to your camera’s manual for the specific timing..
Power on the camera (if required)
Some cameras require holding the button while powering on the camera for the reset to initiate.
Release the button
After the designated time, release the button. The camera should reboot with factory settings.
Examples by Manufacturer
Hikvision: Hold the reset button while powering on the camera for at least 10 seconds.
Dahua: Press and hold the reset button for at least 5 seconds, or until the camera restarts. Alternatively, some Dahua models allow for a reset by shorting specific wires on the camera’s cable.
Vivotek: Find a small probe and press the reset button inside the reset hole for a few seconds. Hold it until the LED goes into POST (power on self-test) mode.
Nest: Nest cameras require a different approach. Locate the reset button on the camera stand and hold it down with a paperclip for several seconds. You’ll see a specific light pattern indicating a successful reset.
